The extreme difficulty which foreigners experience in acquiring an adequate pronunciation of Chinese, makes the employment of native Evangelists (in all cases the most hopeful course,) almost indispensable here.
For the preparation of such a class of agents, an EPISCOPAL COLLEGE, of which the Bishop of Victoria is to be ex officio Warden, is about to be established at Hong Kong. The commencement of such an Institution already exists, in a School erected there, at the cost of nearly £3000, by a native of Clifton, the Rev. VINCENT STANTON, the Colonial Chaplain. This School Mr. STANTON proposes to transfer to the Bishop. The cost of necessary additions to the Building, and other expenses for the completion of the Institution, will be at least £5000; and a permanent Sustentation Fund will be also needed, in the form of Annual Subscriptions.
Such an Establishment will be also available for the TRANSLATION OF SUITABLE BOOKS into Chinese; an agency obviously, from the reading habits of the population, of immense importance for the propagation of the Gospel in China.
Although the College is the main feature in the Bishop's plan, there are two other objects naturally connected with it, for which it is also hoped sufficient contributions will be raised, viz.:—
A Translation Fund for printing Chinese Books and Tracts: and a Fund for the Employment of suitable Native Agents, as Colporteurs and Distributors of Christian Publications on the mainland of China; who may be expected to form the nucleus of a Native Ordained Ministry.
Copies of Books, either of Theology or General Literature, will be very acceptable for a College Library.
The Committee feel the more confidence in earnestly recommending these plans to the support and sympathy of members of the Church of England; as they are the matured results of the Bishop of Victoria's personal inspection and enquiry during the time of his missionary residence in that country, in which he is about to undertake the duties of the high and sacred office, to which in God's providence he has been called.
Subscriptions or Donations towards these important objects will be thankfully received by the Treasurers, Secretary, or by any Member of the Local Committee. Donations may be paid, if preferred, in successive annual instalments.
